Q: How does the NX 350h hybrid work?

ALL-ELECTRIC AT LOWER SPEEDS When you start off and at lower speeds, the powerful front electric motor (and rear electric motor on All-Wheel Drive models) propels the NX 350h with electric power supplied by the battery. At this point you are enjoying near-silent and 100% electric driving for a short distance. NEAR SILENT AT CRUISING SPEEDS Lexus Self-Charging Hybrids are quiet and relaxing to drive. At higher speeds, the ultra-smooth 2.5-litre petrol engine cuts in quietly and receives assistance from the electric motor(s) when required. With engine running at optimal speed, surplus power can be used to charge the battery. Alongside low emissions and fuel consumption, this near perfect distribution of petrol and electric power also provides the extraordinary driving enjoyment which characterises the NX 350h. RAPID LINEAR ACCELERATION Lexus Self-Charging Hybrids are fun to drive. When you accelerate hard, the power of the electric motor(s) instantaneously supplements the NX’s 2.5-litre petrol engine. Together they deliver a potent surge of torque, providing rapid linear acceleration precisely when you need it. REGENERATIVE BRAKING, NO PLUGGING IN When decelerating, coasting, or when you come to rest, the petrol engine often turns off silently. On braking, or when you take your foot off the accelerator, regenerative braking harnesses your car’s kinetic energy (this is wasted in conventional cars). The NX 350h converts this into electrical energy for storage in the hybrid battery, together with power generated whilst driving at higher speeds, which means it never needs plugging in.

The NX exterior is a fusion of vital dynamism, innovation through advanced technology and ‘cool’ fashion, resulting in a look that goes beyond pure aesthetics. Our designers collaborated closely with Lexus engineers to create an ultra-stable, aerodynamically efficient car. This is “functional beauty”.   Determined to create a powerful new look for the latest NX, our designers developed a more dynamic grille, with an integrated frame. As well as contributing to weight reduction, the design emphasises the car’s dynamic impression. The striking vertical design of the grille, in combination with triple slits at the bottom, provides enhanced cooling, while the ultra-slim quadruple LED headlights underline the Lexus L-motif of the daytime running lights.

  Look at the NX side on and you’ll observe the fusion of sharpness and emotional attraction in the design. It’s a new approach, fusing two conflicting ‘tastes’ in a well-balanced mix.   The ergonomic front seats in the NX offer top-class support and comforts like heating and ventilation. In order to provide proper ergonomic support around the waist, a concave shape was created in the seat sides. This reduces elbow contact when using the steering wheel, shift lever or the console lid. Among the sumptuous upholstery you sense the human hand: the quality which pervades every inch of the cabin can be attributed to our ‘Takumi’ craftspeople, their artistry honed over at least 15 years.

  The NX’s cockpit represents a bold evolution of our Tazuna concept. Why is Electrification Important?

In order to curb greenhouse gases, we believe that effective vehicle electrification is essential. Since the launch of the RX 400h in 2005, the world’s first electrified luxury car, Lexus has taken the initiative in developing and promoting the widespread use of self-charging hybrids and plug-in hybrids. As well as reducing the emissions of our cars, by 2050 we plan to achieve ever lower CO2 emissions from all Lexus manufacturing plants and minimize their water usage.

1. SAFER THAN EVER BEFORE
  
  The NX has next-generation Lexus Safety System + that features levels of protection never seen before. Proactive Driving Assist, for example, is a Lexus-first which uses Obstacle Anticipation Assist, Deceleration Assist and Steering Assist to make your driving even safer. This is in addition to an advanced Pre-Collision System which can detect motorcycles in daytime and bicycles/pedestrians are detected even at night.

2. PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM
  
  Alongside detecting motorcycles during daytime, the Lexus Pre-Collision System allows more potential collisions to be avoided, such as at right / left turns, and with cut-in traffic. It can also recognise collision risks with oncoming traffic or crossing pedestrians when making a turn at a junction. The ability to avoid an impact is increased by Emergency Steering Assist.

3. DYNAMIC RADAR CRUISE CONTROL
  
  This system uses the millimetre-wave radar sensor and a camera to detect the vehicle in front and maintain an appropriate distance. If the vehicle in front comes to a halt, the NX will stop too. When the vehicle moves off again, you will too. It quickly recognises traffic cutting in front and, in conjunction with Lane Trace Assist, follows a more natural line through bends.

4. EXTENDED SAFETY PACKAGE
  
  Alongside Lexus Safety System +, the NX features an optional Extended Safety Package. This includes Lane Change Assistance (LCA), which, once activated by the driver, provides automatic lane change steering on the motorway and Front Cross-Traffic Alert, which uses radar monitoring to warn the driver of traffic approaching from either side.

ALL-ELECTRIC AT LOWER SPEEDS

When you start off and at lower speeds, the powerful front electric motor (and rear electric motor on All-Wheel Drive models) propels the NX 350h with electric power supplied by the battery. At this point you are enjoying near-silent and 100% electric driving for a short distance.

NEAR SILENT AT CRUISING SPEEDS

Lexus Self-Charging Hybrids are quiet and relaxing to drive. At higher speeds, the ultra-smooth 2.5-litre petrol engine cuts in quietly and receives assistance from the electric motor(s) when required. With engine running at optimal speed, surplus power can be used to charge the battery. Alongside low emissions and fuel consumption, this near perfect distribution of petrol and electric power also provides the extraordinary driving enjoyment which characterises the NX 350h.

RAPID LINEAR ACCELERATION

Lexus Self-Charging Hybrids are fun to drive. When you accelerate hard, the power of the electric motor(s) instantaneously supplements the NX’s 2.5-litre petrol engine. Together they deliver a potent surge of torque, providing rapid linear acceleration precisely when you need it.

REGENERATIVE BRAKING, NO PLUGGING IN

When decelerating, coasting, or when you come to rest, the petrol engine often turns off silently. On braking, or when you take your foot off the accelerator, regenerative braking harnesses your car’s kinetic energy (this is wasted in conventional cars). The NX 350h converts this into electrical energy for storage in the hybrid battery, together with power generated whilst driving at higher speeds, which means it never needs plugging in.

Our Lexus Plug-In Hybrid drivetrain combines the advantages of 4th generation Lexus Self-Charging Hybrid* and Lexus Electric Vehicle (EV) technology. The ‘plus’ in the NX 450h+ name pays tribute to the car’s extra-powerful lithium-ion battery and exceptional range in EV mode. And unlike a conventional plug-in when the battery is depleted, on the Lexus RX 450h+, it switches to highly efficient Lexus Self-Charging Hybrid mode and recharges the battery as you drive.

RANGE IN EV MODE

The NX 450h+’s four-mode selector ensures your journey is always smooth and fun. The EV default setting maximizes battery use, allowing you to travel distances up to 74 km** (combined cycle, up to 97 km** in the city). Powered by an advanced 18.1 kWh lithium-ion battery, you can enjoy near-silent and all-electric driving up to 135 km/h.

ACCELERATION ON DEMAND

In Auto EV/Hybrid mode, and depending on how hard you depress the accelerator, the powerful petrol engine will spring to life and deliver rapid linear acceleration just when you need it, letting you reach 100 km/h in a mere 6.3 seconds.

CHARGES ON THE GO

If you urgently need to charge your battery, for instance to enter a zero emissions zone, you can use the Battery Charging mode to top it up.

EXPERIENCE FROM 2.5 MILLION HYBRIDS

Benefiting from our 4th generation Lexus Self-Charging Hybrid* technology, if the battery’s charge level drops while in EV or Auto EV/Hybrid mode, the system will switch to ultra-efficient Hybrid mode, letting you enjoy full vehicle power again.
